Reading I: 1 Kings 19: 16b, 19-21
You shall anoint Elisha.
First Reading Background
- In the first reading, Elijah announces God's call to Elisha by throwing his mantle over him.
- This signified the call to prophetic office.
- Elisha closed the door to his former way of life by killing the draft animals with which he had been plowing, using the plow for firewood, and preparing a magnificent feast for the people.
Reading II: Galatians 5: 1, 13-18
My brothers and sisters, you are called to freedom.
Second Reading Background
- In his Letter to the Galatians, Paul emphasizes a call to freedom.
- The disciples were called to abandon all the things that enslaved them and to subject themselves to the Spirit of love.
- That Spirit brings joy and peace, kindness and generosity.
Gospel: Luke 9: 51-62
I will follow you wherever you will go.
Gospel Background
- The Gospel reading shows the price Jesus paid to follow his call.
- Because he was on his way to Jewish Jerusalem, the Samaritans would not welcome him. Jesus was caught between two hostile forces.
- One group rejected him because he was going to Jerusalem. There, the other group would kill him.

Lectura Primera: 1 Reyes 19: 16b, 19-21

Primera lectura
- En la primera lectura, Elías anuncia el llamado de Dios a Eliseo al lanzar su manto sobre él.
- Esto significó el llamado a la obra profética.
- Eliseo cerró la puerta a su antiguo estilo de vida matando a los animales con los que araba y usando la madera del arado, preparó un magnífico banquete para que su gente comiera.
Segunda lectura: Gálatas 5: 1, 13-18
Hermanos y hermanas, ustedes son llamados a la libertad.
Segunda lectura
- En la Carta a los Gálatas, Pablo enfatiza un llamado a la libertad.
- Los discípulos fueron llamados a abandonar todas las cosas que los esclavizaba y que se pusieran al servicio del Espíritu del amor.
- Ese Espíritu trae júbilo y paz, bondad y generosidad.
Evangelio: Lucas 9: 51-52

Evangelio
- La lectura del Evangelio muestra el precio que pagó Jesús para seguir su llamado.
- Ya que estaba en camino hacia Jerusalén judía, los samaritanos no lo recibirían bien. Jesús estaba en medio de dos fuerzas hostiles.
- Un grupo lo rechazó porque se dirigía a Jerusalén. Allí, el otro grupo lo mataría.
