Reading I: Isaiah 55: 1-3
Come to the water!
First Reading Background
- In Isaiah 55, God, through the prophet, invites everyone to a feast free-of charge.
- Isaiah offers encouragement to the people with the news that their exile will end.
- A banquet is the image for this renewal. Just as the Sinai covenant was sealed with a meal, so this new covenant will be sealed with the finest food and drink.
Reading II: Romans 8: 35, 37-39
What can separate you from the love of Christ?
Second Reading Background
- Chapter 8 of Paul’s Letter to the Romans comes to a conclusion with a poetic declaration of God’s great love.
- Paul stresses that there is nothing in or out of the world that can separate us from the love of Christ.
- The power of God’s love is greater than anything else that exists.
Gospel: Matthew 14: 13-21
You give them something to eat!
Gospel Background
- In today’s Gospel the miracle of the loaves and fishes is a sign that in Jesus, the messianic age has arrived.
- Jesus’ disciples are called to participate in ’feeding the world’ by their ministry.
- The vocabulary in today’s Gospel is linked to the early Christian Eucharist. Jesus ’took’ the food, ’blessed and broke it’, and ’gave it’ to the disciples.

Lectura Primera: Isaías 55: 1-3
Venid a las aguas.
Primera lectura
- En Isaías 55, Dios, a través del profeta, invita a todos a una celebración gratuita.
- Isaías anima a las personas con las noticias de que su exilio terminará.
- Un banquete es la imagen de su renovación. Al igual que el compromiso de Sinaí fue sellado con una comida, así el nuevo compromiso será sellado con la mejor comida y bebida.
Segunda lectura: Romanos 8: 35, 37-39
¿Quién nos separa del amor de Cristo?
Segunda lectura
- El capítulo 8 de la Carta a los Romanos de Pablo concluye con una declaración poética del gran amor de Dios.
- Pablo refuerza que no hay nada dentro o fuera del mundo que nos pueda separar del amor de Cristo.
- El poder del amor de Dios es mayor que cualquier otra cosa que exista.
Evangelio: Mateo 14: 13-21
Dadles vosotros de comer.
Evangelio
- En el Evangelio de hoy el milagro del pan y los peces es una señal de que con Jesús, la era mesiánica ha llegado.
- Los discípulos de Jesús son llamados a participar en "alimentar al mundo" a través de su ministerio.
- El vocabulario en el Evangelio de hoy está enlazado a la Eucaristía cristiana antigua. Jesús "tomó" el pan, lo "bendijo y lo partió" y "se lo dio" a sus discípulos.
