Solemnity of Pentecost - Week of May 11, 2008
Reading I: Acts 2: 1-11
All were filled with the Holy Spirit.
First Reading Background
- The Pentecost mystery reverses the Tower of Babel.
- In today’s first reading, the many visitors to Jerusalem are foreigners, thus they are hampered by the diversity of their languages and regional dialects.
- Rather than being confused by the different languages, each person hears God’s deeds proclaimed by the disciples, in his or her own language.
Reading II: 1 Corinthians 12: 3b-7, 12-13
There are different gifts, but the same Spirit.
Second Reading Background
- Today’s second reading underlines the necessity of unity in the Holy Spirit.
- The gifts of the Spirit are for the building up of the Church.
- However different the gifts, when members of the Church use their gifts to complement the gifts of others, they form the one Body of Christ.
Gospel: John 20: 19-23
As the Father sent me, so I send you.
Gospel Background
- In today’s Gospel, the disciples pass from a state of fear to joy.
- Jesus breaths his Spirit on them and he commissions the disciples to continue his mission on earth.
- Enlivened by the Spirit, the disciples are empowered to make the presence of God known throughout the world.

Lectura Primera: Hechos de los apóstoles 2: 1-11
Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo.
Primera lectura
- El misterio de Pentecostés invierte los eventos de la Torre de Babel.
- En la primera lectura de hoy, los visitantes a Jerusalén son extranjeros, porque ellos son obstaculizados por la diversidad de sus idiomas y dialectos regionales.
- En lugar de estar confundidos por los diferentes idiomas, cada persona escucha las obras de Dios proclamadas por los discípulos, en su propio idioma.
Segunda lectura: 1 Corintios 12: 3b-7, 12-13
Hay diversidad de dones, pero el Espíritu es el mismo.
Segunda lectura
- La segunda lectura de hoy subraya la necesidad de la unidad en el Espíritu Santo.
- Los dones del Espíritu son para la construcción de la Iglesia.
- Teniendo diferentes dones, cuando los miembros de la Iglesia usan sus dones para complementar los dones de otros, forman un sólo Cuerpo de Cristo.
Evangelio: Juan 20: 19-23
Como el padre me ha enviado, así también yo os envío.
Evangelio
- En el Evangelio de hoy, los discípulos pasan de un estado de miedo a uno de alegría.
- Jesús exhala su Espíritu sobre ellos y él comisiona a los discípulos a continuar su misión sobre la tierra.
- Animados por el Espíritu, los discípulos tienen el poder de hacer que la presencia de Dios se conozca por todo el mundo.
