Reading I: Isaiah 25: 6-10a
The Lord will provide for his people.
First Reading Background
- Chapters 24-27 of the Book of Isaiah turn to the end times of God’s great victory, when all enemies would be defeated and God’s people would rejoice.
- A favorite image for the last day was the image of a banquet which God will provide on Zion, the holy mountain.
- All peoples will be invited, except, of course, God’s enemies who have already been defeated. Sin and death are the final enemies.
Reading II: Philippians 4: 12-14, 19-20
In Christ, I am strong.
Second Reading Background
- Paul had just received a gift from the Philippians and wrote to express his gratitude.
- He praised them for their concern, but he also wanted to make clear to them that it was God who sustained him.
- Ultimately, Paul trusted in God’s great banquet at the end of time.
Gospel: Matthew 22: 1-14
All are invited to the feast.
Gospel Background
- Jesus tells the parable of the wedding banquet to describe the kingdom of God.
- Those invited to God’s kingdom must respond to the invitation with repentance and good works.
- Because many of the Jews in Jerusalem refused the invitation, the Gentiles were invited to the banquet.

Lectura Primera: Isaías 25: 6-10a
El Señor proveerá para su gente.
Primera lectura
- Los capítulos 24 a 27 del libro de Isaías convierten el fin de los tiempos en la gran victoria de Dios, cuando todos los enemigos serán vencidos y las personas de Dios se regocijarán.
- Una imagen favorita para el último día era la imagen de un banquete ofrecido por Dios en Zion, la montaña sagrada.
- Todas las personas serían invitadas, excepto, por supuesto, los enemigos de Dios quienes ya fueron vencidos. El pecado y la muerte son los enemigos finales.
